BFF film event celebrates Mandela, MLK
7:30 PM
Emerson Center's Crawford Theatre
Description:
Join the Bozeman Film Festival Thursday, January 30th at 7:30 pm for a night of film, remembrance and musical celebration of the life of Nelson Mandela, the 20th Anniversary of his election as President of South Africa, and Martin Luther King Day with the screening of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. Based on Mandela's autobiography, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to unify the country's once segregated society, the film is a New York Times Critics Pick. Actor Indris Elba delivers an extraordinary performance as Mandela; his portrayal captures the universally relatable core humanity that defines Mandela's heroism.

Opening the evening will be Dr. Ilse-Mari Lee, Dean of the Montana State University Honors College and a professor of music at MSU. Originally from South Africa, Dr. Lee is a world-renowned concert soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, as well as an acclaimed composer.

Reverend Denise Rogers will then join Ilse-Mari for what promises to be an unforgettable cello and vocal performance of the new South African National Anthem "Nkosi Sikelele Afrika." Rev. Rogers, a Methodist Episcopalian minister, has been an inspirational figure in Bozeman since 1992, when she arrived as both its first black and first woman minister. Her 'prophetic voice' is legendary in our community, raised not only in powerful song, but also in support for the homeless, immigrants and single mothers.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom screens Thursday, January 30th in The Emerson's Crawford Theater at 7:30 pm. Rated PG-13, it runs 141 minutes. Tickets are $8 / General; $7 / Students and Seniors, and are available in advance at Cactus Records and one hour before the film in The Emerson's lobby. Enjoy no-host cocktails with the Zebra Lounge from 6:30-7:30 pm. For previews and upcoming films, visit www.bozemanfilmfestival.org -- and Keep 'em Flickering!
