Sabrina Daldry and Catherine Givings are sexually frustrated with their husbands and are desperate to try an alternative. Meanwhile, Catherine\'s husband, the prim Doctor Givings, is treating his patients with a new electrical machine. Catherine\'s curiosity over the strange sounds emanating from his office deliver up the alternative she is seeking and a whole lot more. This Tony nominated play by Sarah Ruhl pries open Victorian Age sexual mores while revealing the early history of the vibrator as a tool to treat women\'s \"hysteria\". Orgasm (or paroxysm) was used to relieve the \"symptoms\" of hysteria: restlessness, irritability and anger. These days, women use a similar treatment to relieve the same symptoms arising from the ignorance of Republican men in the U.S. House of Representatives.
