Carmen
7:00 PM    Willson Auditorium

Description:
The Intermountain Opera Association celebrates its thirtieth anniversary with a lavish production of “Carmen” by George Bizet. This most popular of all the grand operas will be performed Wednesday and Friday, May 14 and 16, at 7 PM and Sunday, May 18 at 3 PM at the Willson Auditorium in Bozeman. The story concerns a beautiful, flirtatious woman who seduces the reluctant young Don Jose and then abandons him for a celebrity bullfighter. It will be sung in French with English super-titles project above the stage. The three principal singers have all performed with the New York City Opera: Audrey Babcock as Carmen, Scott Piper as Don Jose and Carlos Archuleta as the toreador. Other principals include Jennifer Welch-Babidge, Jeffrey Buchman and Spanish-born dancer Rosa Mercedes who will choreograph the opera. MSU alums Chris Johnson and Lukas Graf will perform featured roles as will Bozeman-based singers Jon Harney, Wendy Monson, and Catherine Viscardi. Julian Dawson returns to Bozeman to conduct and Steven Daigle will provide stage direction. The chorus and orchestra are recruited from among the area’s best musicians. “Carmen” also features a children’s chorus composed of 17 Bozeman fourth, fifth and sixth-graders. Tickets for “Carmen” are available on line (go to www.operabozeman.org for the link) or by phone at 406-585-7545.
