Sweatshop Union is a Canadian hip hop collective formed in 2000 when four politically
minded rap acts Dirty Circus, Creative Minds, Innocent Bystanders, and solo artist
Kyprios came together "to create a powerful, distinctive voice", and to produce their first
album, which was published in 2001.
Known for an inventive and socially-conscious sound, Sweatshop Union's music
focuses on being "honest" commenting on issues ranging from the war in Iraq, the
plight of the poor and working-class, to the negativity and misogyny of mainstream hip-
hop. Sweatshop Union are heavyweights of North Western hip-hop, and have earned a
reputation as the hardest working collective in the region. Having performed over five
hundred shows internationally, they have changed the perception of what live hip-hop can
achieve.
The group's most ambitious record to date and award winning Bill Murray EP, (2011
Western Canadian Music's Hip Hop Recording of the Year) brought a whole new level to
their steadily growing underground following. Building on this they will release another
two new albums in 2012.
The first, a follow up to the Bill Murray EP, will have Sweatshop Union focused on
furthering the progressive sound they're known for. The second, released under the
group's Leisure Gang moniker, promises to bring a loose party feel to both the live show
and the music.
Recently, URB Magazine featured them in their next top 100. They're not alone in
thinking that Sweatshop Union is a band worth keeping an eye on. Their consistently fresh
and poignant music continues to become more relevant daily and the group shows no
signs of slowing down.
Understanding the importance of creating a live performance that is impossible to forget,
the members of Sovereign Sect are masters at captivating a crowd and leaving them
electrified. The Fargo-based, tri-producer/drummer quartet uses nearly forty years of
collective musical experience to accomplish its goal of pushing the limits of the electronic
live show and annihilating their audiences.
