Bells of the Bridgers Annual Concert, "Joyful, Joyful"
3:00 PM    Bozeman United Methodist Church

Description:
The Bells of the Bridgers has expanded its repertoire and added an extra performance in 2013.
The community handbell choir, which gratefully calls Bozeman United Methodist Church its home, will be joined by the Livingston Grace Note Community Handbells for an afternoon concert, "Joyful, Joyful!" on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. at Holbrook Methodist Church on South Fifth and West Lewis in Livingston.
Then, the Bells of the Bridgers will return home to bring "Joyful, Joyful!" to the Bozeman community at Bozeman United Methodist Church, 121 S. Willson Ave., at 3 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 24.
The concert includes variations on Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" theme and accompanying lyrics by Henry Van Dyke, as well as other joyous odes to the earth and creator.
Other highlights include a rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz," arranged by Joel Raney. "The Tennessee Waltz" is the fourth official state song of Tennessee. It was written by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart of the Golden West Cowboys and popularized by country singer Patti Page in 1950.
"Waters of Grace" by Karen Buckwalter is a combines the melodies of three early American tunes, "Holy Manna," Beach Spring" and "Nettleton" in a flowing and rhythmic piece that showcases the variety of methods for ringing handbells and evokes images of flowing water and rain drops.
"Prelude on Thaxted" arranged by "Michael Helman" is taken from English composer Gustav Holst's tune based on a theme from the "Jupiter" movement of "The Planets" and named after the village where he wrote the piece.
Under the direction of M.A. Bellingham, Bells of the Bridgers is now in its eighth season. The group's ringers represent a cross-section of the area handbell community, with its members counted among most bell groups in the valley, including a handful of choir directors.
The 13-member choir features Stephanie Breen, Debbie Ernst, Frances Goosey, Gail Haynes, Joel Haynes, Rachel Hergett, Grace Holiday, Christie S. Kraft, Linda Larsen, Christina Skarka, Becca Syme and Alison Todd.
This year's concert will be performed on five octaves of Schulmerich bells as well as Malmark handchimes with piano accompaniment.
Special guests include Kerri Brown on flute, Lynne Kiirtley on piano and organ, Alison Todd on piano and Jenny Eck, Kerri Brown, Richard Keigley and Dave Dickensheets on vocals.
A six-person ensemble will also perform a tribute to jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck with a handbell version of the iconic piece "Take Five," which first appeared on the 1959 album by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, "Time Out," featuring songs with unusual time signatures for jazz. "Take Five" is in 5/4 time.
The concert is free and open to the public. An offering to offset costs of handbell music and other expenses - Bells of the Bridger's only income - will be taken.
