Photographer Ranganath Parthasarathy and Tom Murphy Exhibit
10:00 AM
Bozeman Public Library
Photographer Ranganath Parthasarathy exhibits and Tom Murphy talks at the Bozeman Library Atrium Gallery. Emigrant based photographer Ranga Parthasarathy will exhibit his work in the Atrium Gallery at the Library March 1 through April 30, 2018. The Bozeman Public Library Foundation, sponsors of the exhibit, will host an artist's reception on Friday, March 30, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., free and open to the public. Livingston photographer, author, and modern-day adventurer Tom Murphy will be there that evening to give a talk on photography. Ranga is a professional scientist and has worked at the bench in a lab all his life. He used to wake up every day wondering what he was going to discover that day. Not every experiment everyday would be earth- shaking, but the prospect of discovery is what drove him. He brings this same passion to photography. What shots will I get today? It is what makes me pick up a camera almost every chance I get. To be sure, I might not even like any of the shots that I take on a given day, never mind taking masterpieces, but anticipation and curiosity are everything says Ranga. Parthasrathy participated in the Camera Club's exhibit at the Bozeman Library in 2017 and went on to apply for his own show. He goes on to say "The right photograph will unseat you, move you, cause you to stumble as you edge in closer for a better look: the photographer does not need to explain what he meant. Like music, it announces itself directly to your heart. I find this lack of a need for commentary to be most satisfying: I'm showing you what I saw, how I saw it, what it meant to me, and words are superfluous."

Tom Murphy's photographs have been used in numerous regional, national, and international publications including Life, Architectural Digest, National Geographic, Audubon and Time. Murphy's first book, Silence and Solitude, Yellowstone's Winter Wilderness, won a 2002 Montana Book Award. PBS Nature's show "Christmas in Yellowstone", first aired nationally on Nov 19 and Dec 24, 2006, and features Tom's winter photography and some of his backcountry skiing stories.

The exhibition will be on display during Library hours. A percentage of sales will go to the Bozeman Public Library Foundation to ensure continuation of cultural programs at the Library for public benefit.
