“Exploring Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”
3:00 PM
Montana State University
BOZEMAN—Montana State University’s Continuing, Professional and Lifelong Learning hosts a non-credit summer course called Exploring Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Taught by Peter B. Olson of Mississippi State University, the course explores how technology has created cultural divisions in America and how Pirsig's Zen orientation can help people find a balance in an increasingly fast-paced world. The course aims to provide a context where students can reflect on their own cultural concerns and to reconsider ways to find more harmonious relationships to their worlds. Pirsig taught at Montana State University in the late 1950s. The author later returned to Bozeman, where his hikes in the Gallatin Range influenced the novel’s holistic view of nature that he associates with a Zen perspective. The course is open to non-traditional students and life-long learners. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about the author and his important literary contributions by visiting the MSU Archive and examining the Robert Pirsig papers collection. The course meets Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on July 9, 16 and 23. Registration is $169. For more information or to enroll, call (406) 994-6550.
