Federal acquisitions of supplies and services between $3,500 and $25,000 are supposed to be reserved for small businesses and they do not have to be advertised. So how do federal buyers find small businesses that sell the supplies or services they want to buy in that range? Federal contracting officers based in Montana have told us the three search tools they use are the System for Award Management (SAM), the Dynamic Small Business Search (DSBS), and Google.

How do you ensure that you end up in the search results when a contracting officer is searching for something you sell? One way is to have a robust SBA profile. If you skipped the SBA Supplemental Pages when you registered in SAM, or you didn't put a lot of thought into your answers, your SBA profile is probably underperforming. Incomplete and sparsely-worded profiles are less likely to show up in search results, and even if they do, you're not putting your company's best face forward. When you have a ready buyer, that's a crime.
